DESY is one of the world's leading research institutes in the field of particle acceleration. Four new buildings are currently being built on the DESY campus in Hamburg Bahrenfeld and in the adjacent Innovation Park, which serve as visitor centres and expansion of the research infrastructure. The buildings form important landmarks and signposts on the site. The DESY Campus forms the core of Campus West in Hamburg and is a central component of the newly designed Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. … Institute, shape the urban development of the area and the development in the framework plan. In addition to the structural perspective for the science sites, the framework plan also describes the overall development into an attractive and identity-creating campus with high recognition value, good orientation and stronger networking with the surrounding neighborhood. On behalf of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the framework planning for Campus West was developed by Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld GmbH and in close cooperation with the Authority for Urban Development and Housing, the Authority for Science, Research, Equality and Districts, the Altona District Office, the University of Hamburg, the DESY Research Centre and the Max Planck Society. Current projects include the visitor center DESYUM and the "Integrated Technology and Start-up Center I" (ITGZ I). In the future, the development of the DESY large-scale research device PETRA IV will be added. With the Campus West framework plan, the actors involved have coordinated the long-term urban planning and open space planning structure. These include, for example, the overall spatial qualities, design principles and the definition of potential areas for future research buildings. Specifically, the Campus West master plan sets the following goals: The linking of public spaces and their opening into the district, the development of a sustainable and climate-friendly campus, the clear restructuring of urban planning and the promotion of the innovation location through good framework conditions for research and exchange. For example, basics for the development and the free space character were agreed in detail. Nevertheless, the framework planning is designed so flexibly that it is possible to react to changed conditions. Short-term projects or other changes can thus be seamlessly integrated as integral parts of campus planning in order to further strengthen the Science City. The areas / lots for this competition are part of the Science-City Hamburg Bahrenfeld. The construction areas of two of the buildings, the visitor centre DESYUM (lot 2) and IGTZ I (lot 3, innovation and start-up centre) are directly attached to the newly emerging central and public square of Campus West. The plot of land of the CAST building (lot 1), with the new accelerator control room and research facilities, is located in the central core of the DESY campus in the immediate vicinity of PETRA III (positron-electron-tandem ring plant). A second innovation and start-up centre, IGTZ II (lot 4), is located in the neighbouring Altona Innovation Park on Luruper Hauptstraße and Elbgaustrasse. Artistic interventions (paintings, objects or installations) are sought on the open spaces of the buildings, which are intended to support the function of the buildings in expression within the framework of "Kunst am Bau". The works of art in the four sub-areas are awarded individually or in their entirety through a competition procedure. The competition procedure is organised as a two-phase art competition
