In the case of railway tunnels in accordance with the EBA ril tunnel (two-tube principle), it is provided in the event of an incident (e.g. fire) that emergency vehicles of the external rescue forces enter the other tube not affected by the event. The vehicles are almost exclusively powered by a diesel engine, which causes corresponding emissions during operation (exhaust gases). Unlike road tunnels, electrified railway tunnels do not provide exhaust gas evacuation systems.
