What the buyer is looking for
The research project aims to gain in-depth knowledge of influencing factors on subjective safety at small train stations. For this purpose, objective and subjective data as well as investigations are carried out under real and experimental conditions. Combined analyses result in evidence-based prioritisation of measures with the greatest possible impact on people's sense of security. In the project, an evidence-based model is developed to explain subjective safety at small stations. So far, little data has been available for such small stations. At the same time, increasing avoidance tendencies can be observed there. The preoccupation with subjective safety is relevant because (1) the risk of becoming a victim of a crime at stations is low, but the sense of security is still poor, and (2) measures aimed at higher objective safety can differ substantially from those aimed at improving…

… subjective safety - these are two largely independent and independent aspects. For example, more surveillance and police presence can reduce offences and thus increase objective security, but at the same time increase the feeling of insecurity because they signal danger. The project is based on a theory-driven, comprehensive data collection with large, heterogeneous samples, combined with objective context factors and experimental investigations. Particular attention is paid to interactions between influencing factors as well as differences between social groups. On this basis, evidence-based measures for the targeted improvement of the sense of security are to be prioritized and presented to the public.
