However, ammonia can also be released in road traffic - especially in the context of exhaust gas aftertreatment. The EU Air Quality Directive 2024/2881 classifies ammonia as an air pollutant of concern for the first time and includes it in the measurement obligations of supersites. To date, insufficient measurement data have been available, especially in the area of federal motorways. The aim of this study is therefore to systematically record and evaluate road traffic-related ammonia concentrations on federal motorways in order to create a reliable data basis for classifying road transport as an emission source in terms of emissions. … measurements according to VDI 3869 sheet 4 are to be carried out at two locations (BASt measuring cross-section A 555 at Wesseling + further high-frequency BAB location) for the period of one year. The measurements are to be made on both sides of the road in a two-week interval with double determination for quality assurance. The laboratory analysis is to be carried out by a laboratory accredited according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025. As part of the data evaluation, seasonal, meteorological and traffic-related influences as well as interactions between ammonia, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter are to be analyzed. The Luv-Lee analysis is intended to estimate the traffic-related contribution to the overall load. Based on the results, a concept for the permanent integration of an ammonia measuring system into the measuring cross-section A 555 is developed. The project creates a reliable data basis for classifying road traffic as an ammonia source in terms of emissions and will enable the validation of modelled ammonia concentrations in road traffic in the future.
