However, there are several operators who receive and scrap pleasure boats in return for compensation from the person who hands in the boat. The responsibility and costs associated with scrapping lie with the last owner and may in some cases lead to the abandonment of end-of-life recreational craft. There are already many recreational boats without a known owner both on municipal land and at non-profit associations (such as boat clubs). Today, there may be up to 400 000 boats approaching their ‘best before’ date and up to 35 000 already abandoned pleasure boats. Recreational craft that are not disposed of and recycled can contribute to further littering and pollution of nature and aquatic environments. Many of the boats are over 40 years old…
