What the buyer is looking for
The Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH (HZB) is an independent scientific research center under the umbrella of the Helmholtz Association with locations in Berlin-Adlershof and Wannsee. The electron storage ring BESSY II delivers high-brilliance synchrotron radiation from the terahertz to the X-ray range. With its focus on VUV and soft X-rays, BESSY II is ideally suited for the analysis of energy materials and thin-film systems. The further development of instrumentation and the development of a concept for a successor source (BESSY III) are among the most important tasks in the coming years. At our electron storage ring BESSY II, we record an average of 2,700 visits by guest researchers from 28 countries every year. Every year, 500 to 600 publications are published in scientific journals based on measurements at BESSY II and – until the end of 2019 – on…

… measurements at BER II. The ‘BESSY II+’ upgrade programme: This programme makes it possible to continue cutting-edge research at BESSY II and to test new concepts with regard to the successor source BESSY III. BESSY is to become an ‘operando-synchrotron for the energy transition’. BESSY II+ includes new experimental possibilities, especially for operando studies. These make it possible, for example, to observe batteries or solar cells ‘in operation’. In addition to the new "operando" opportunities, the BESSY II+ project also focuses on "modernisation" and "sustainability". Sustainability includes, among other things, the use of waste heat from the BESSY II experiment hall. In addition, machine learning and artificial intelligence are increasingly being integrated into many processes. As part of the modernisation project, the HZB has received additional funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Invest BESSY II+ covers the most important investments for the BMBF-funded project. This funding secures the development of new infrastructures, such as the SoTeXS (Soft-to-Tender X-ray Spectroscopy) instrument. This is a comprehensive concept for metrological, multimodal experiments that can be used in battery and material research for energy applications. This tender covers the procurement and production of two toroidal X-ray mirrors (TO-1, TO-2) coated with Pt/B4C for the measuring station KMC-1 at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. The mirrors are used to focus the white beam of the memory ring. · 2x 1 toroid mirrors for KMC-1 (Bessy II+), according to specifications (technical specification) and award documents

Clement What the numbers say about this buyer
- In this sector the buyer awards roughly every 2 months (61 awards, most recently June 2026) — by that rhythm the next award was due around August 2026. The last award went to Anton Paar Germany GmbH.n = 61
- 33% of this buyer's awards went to companies that had already won here before (229 awards since 2010, spread over 151 companies). 67% went to new names.n = 229 awards since 2010
- The median procedure drew 2 bids (219 procedures with a bid count); 48% ended with a single bidder. Sector: median 1 bid.n = 219
- The award came in at a median 90% of the estimated value (48 awards with both estimate and value) — pricing at the estimate is usually too high here. Sector: 98%.n = 48
- Not one of the 229 awards with a known winner country has gone to a foreign company so far. Sector average: 5%.n = 229
