What the buyer is looking for
The Federal Climate Protection Act (KSG), which is intended to ensure the fulfilment of national climate protection targets and has legally anchored climate protection and sector targets set out in the Climate Protection Plan 20250, is intended to achieve greenhouse gas neutrality in Germany by 2045. Currently, traction current is provided from a mixed portfolio of own conventional power plants, renewable energy plants, as well as the purchase from the public power grid. The strategy for increasing the share of renewable energies (RES) is based, among other things, on the conclusion of green power supply contracts at national and European level as well as the expansion of renewable energy generation plants on railway operating systems. Since April 2023, electricity has been fed directly into the German traction power grid for the first time. Furthermore, the current legislation promotes…

… the increase in the share of renewable energy plants through the General Railway Act (AEG) §18f and the Act on the Expansion of Renewable Energies (EEG) §37. The share of renewable electricity in the traction power mix was already 71.5% in 2025. The increasing expansion or fluctuating renewable energy feed-in systems such as photovoltaics and wind turbines with an inherently fluctuating energy supply, as well as the projected increase in rail transport, increase the complexity of a secure and sustainable energy supply. High load gradients on both the producer and consumer sides and the elimination of conventional power plant technology to ensure grid stability in the traction current network bring with them new technical and economic issues. In particular, the increasing increase in power electronic components and their interaction in the rail system as a whole increase the complexity of the traction current network. The aim of the project is to investigate the effects of the increasing share of renewable energy on the traction current network or on the state public grid and to derive technical and economic requirements or measures for energy storage systems from this. The project is intended to support a secure energy supply in the traction current network and future demand-oriented grid planning and to strengthen the necessary expansion of renewable energy generation plants in the traction current network in order to ensure the implementation of the 2050 climate protection plan for a greenhouse-neutral transport system in 2045.
