Une large part des matériaux étudiés au GREMI se présente sous la forme de revêtements de quelques dizaines de nanomètres d’épaisseurs allant jusqu’à deux micromètres. Ces revêtements sont en général à base de métaux de transition, purement métalliques ou de type oxydes/nitrures. Les plus fins d’entre eux peuvent être constitués de nanostructures carbonées tandis que d’autres peuvent inclure des hétérogénéités de type nanoparticules. Plus récemment, le laboratoire s’est intéressé à la synthèse ou la modification de surface de matériaux poreux de type mousses ou carbones désordonnés ainsi qu’à l’élaboration de matériaux mous tels que des matériaux biologiques. Actuellement, le laboratoire ne dispose pas d’équipement pour mesurer l’adhésion et les propriétés mécaniques de la surface de ces matériaux.
