Trygghetsundersökningar är en del av Rikspolischefens förändringsuppdrag där de ska vara ett stöd i arbetet som bedrivs i syfte till ökad trygghet och säkerhet i samhället. Resultatet från trygghetsundersökningarna ger polisen en lokal, aktuell underrättelseinformation som tillsammans med annan information kan omsättas i operativt arbete vad gäller i första hand brottsförebyggande och trygghetsskapande arbete i samverkan med andra. Uppdraget omfattar förberedelser och utskick av den lokala trygghetsundersökningen, insamling och bearbetningar av svar samt leverans av resultatet i presentationsmaterial och visualiseringsverktyg.
