Liek je potrebný na liečbu pacientov s Pompeho chorobou, ktorí majú nízke hladiny enzýmu nazývaného alfa glukozidáza, ktorý pomáha organizmu regulovať hladiny glykogénu. Glykogén dodáva organizmu energiu, avšak pri Pompeho chorobe sa úrovne glykogénu môžu zvýšiť priveľmi. Liek obsahuje syntetický enzým (účinnú látku) nazývaný alfa-alglukozidáza – dokáže nahradiť prírodný enzým, ktorého je pri Pompeho chorobe nedostatok.
